To all my readers -
I've been working on a new chapbook of poetry to be finished in early 2008. Also, I'm putting the finishing touches on a novel, which is my initial attempt at such an undertaking. In the meantime, I invite and welcome your thoughts on the current works listed on the web site KeithGery.com.

I've read the first 30 pages of Necessary words went unspoken and my short review is, "Wow!"
By the third poem I was already hooked into their rhythm. Now, do I like your poems so much because they are good enough to stand on their own or because I can so strongly relate to them? The answer is both. Just like Bukowski, you have killer last lines. But your poems aren't Bukowski, they have their own voice. They also (as in all my favorite poetry) teach me things about myself, especially those last lines. I love when a poem sneaks up on me and illuminates something honest about human nature. That's one of the best compliments I can give a poet. And yours certainly fit the bill.
Semester break 1969: It sounds like, in our younger days, you and I both hung out with the same type of crowd. I love the last line's "wishing you were here." During those times, many of us wished that "you" person could be there to both experience the thrill provided by living on the edge and also so maybe that same person could pull us from circumstances that we knew would be our inevitable downfalls.
The things we did: How life changes. Or do we unavoidably change and thus so does life.
Sick as a dog: When I quit the abusive lifestyle that was slowly killing me I used to say, "It feels good to feel good." I could easily relate to your last line. It fits both food poisoning and those days of self abuse.
In the silence: We all knew a Freaky Fred.
A cup of tea: Hilarious.
Instinct: Everything we need to know about the "whys" of procreation.
What I didn't want to be: Very brave last two lines. I think, if we are honest enough, we all could say those about ourselves.
Necessary words: "The stars crawl across the sky. In all their glory they never meet." Great!
How's it going?: We all have met those types-"Enough about me, let me tell you more about me."
These are just a few I wanted to comment on. I'm going to try to read the rest without stopping mid-poem to write comments. I think you get my message: your poems are terrific.
Here is the link for that festival I was telling you about. This one contains partial info about 2008's Dodge Poetry Festival.
Almost 20,000 attended the last one. I urge you to apply and read your poetry as one of the Poets Among Us.
